The Shocking Similarities In Kurt Cobain’s and Layne Staley’s Birth Charts

Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley were born six months apart in 1967, a couple of hours’ drive from each other in western Washington. They fronted Nirvana and Alice in Chains, two of the bands that carried the Seattle sound to the whole world. Both died on 5 April: Kurt in 1994, at 27, and Layne in 2002, at 34.

The parallels between their lives are well known. They shared a generation, a city, a profession, a sound and, painfully, an addiction. What is far less known is how closely their birth charts mirror each other, and how the same planetary patterns returned at the end of both lives.

None of this reduces two extraordinary people to a pair of charts. A chart describes a landscape, not a sentence. Still, when two lives look like mirror images on Earth, it is worth looking up and asking what the sky was doing.

A note on the birth data

Both charts use a birth time of 7:38, twelve hours apart on the clock and six months apart on the calendar (Astrotheme, AA) and (Astrotheme).

Kurt was born in Aberdeen, Washington. Layne was born at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, while his parents lived in nearby Kirkland; the few kilometres between the two towns do not change his chart. Every position below was calculated with Swiss Ephemeris in Placidus houses.

The dates of death are the ones estimated by the medical examiners. Kurt was found on 8 April 1994 and Layne around 19 April 2002, and neither exact hour is known. So anything below that depends on the hour is read as the signature of the day, not as a timed chart.

1. Same year, same minute, same Virgo Ascendant

Kurt was born at 7:38 in the evening, Layne at 7:38 in the morning. That twelve-hour mirror is exactly what gives them the same rising sign. In February the Sun is in Pisces, and when it sets in the west, Virgo rises in the east. In August the Sun is in Leo, and shortly after sunrise the next sign up over the horizon is, again, Virgo.

The Ascendant is the first impression, the body and the way a person meets the world. Kurt was a Pisces and Layne a Leo, yet in a room, in an interview or on stage, both carried Virgo’s manner: watchful, self-critical, shy at first contact, sharply observant and acutely aware of the body. Virgo also rules digestion and the nervous system, and Kurt spoke for years about chronic stomach pain that doctors could never fully explain.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, which makes Mercury the ruler of both charts. Where that ruler sits tells us where the life pours its energy:

  • Kurt’s Mercury is at 18° Pisces in the 6th house, the house of daily work, craft and health. His voice was built through routine and repetition: rehearsals, notebooks full of lyrics and drawings, songs reworked again and again. This Mercury also opposes his Pluto and Uranus across the Ascendant axis, so words came out under pressure and carried an edge.
  • Layne’s Mercury is at 26° Leo in the 12th house, beside his Sun, in the house of what is hidden, private and unconscious. His voice seemed to come from somewhere behind him, from the places people do not usually show. The 12th is also the house of retreat and isolation, a theme that would define his last years.

Same rising sign, same ruling planet, two different rooms in which that planet lived. That is the pattern of this whole comparison: one blueprint, expressed through two temperaments.

2. The Gemini Midheaven

Both men have the Midheaven in Gemini: Kurt at 21°47′, Layne at 9°13′. The Midheaven is the top of the chart, the point of vocation, reputation and the role the world remembers us for. Gemini is the sign of the voice, the hands, words and lyrics, and it is ruled by Mercury.

This is the detail that makes the pair so striking. In both charts, Mercury rules the Ascendant and the Midheaven at the same time, so the body and the vocation answer to the same planet. Their bodies were their instruments: a singing voice and a pair of hands on a guitar or on a page.

The aspects to each Midheaven show how differently the same vocation unfolded:

  • Kurt’s Midheaven is squared by Uranus (1°27′) and Pluto (1°59′). His public role was shaped by rupture and transformation. He changed the sound of a decade almost overnight, and fame arrived as an upheaval rather than a reward he could settle into. His Moon and Jupiter also sit in the 10th house in Cancer, the classic signature of a public that feels intimately attached to the person.
  • Layne’s Midheaven is squared by Venus (0°54′). Venus describes beauty, art and attraction, so his career was bound to aesthetics: the voice, the melodies, even the visual art he made for the band, including the sun logo. His Moon also makes a close quintile (0°11′) to the Midheaven, an aspect astrologers associate with creative talent.

The same sign at the top of the chart, two different planets pressing on it. Kurt’s vocation came with a revolution attached. Layne’s came with a muse.

3. Sagittarius on the IC: home, roots and fathers

Opposite the Midheaven sits the Imum Coeli, or IC: the bottom of the chart, the 4th house of home, family and roots. With a Gemini Midheaven, both men have the IC in Sagittarius, Kurt at 21°47′ and Layne at 9°13′.

Sagittarius is the traveller of the zodiac. On the IC it describes a home that keeps moving and roots that are hard to put down. Both left their family homes young and drifted between friends’ houses, relatives and rehearsal spaces. Layne was working at the Music Bank rehearsal studios when he met Jerry Cantrell in 1987. Then came years of touring, when the tour bus was the closest thing to a home either of them had.

In my practice I read the IC as the father. Sagittarius here suggests a father who is far away, absent or always on the road. Kurt’s parents divorced when he was nine, Layne’s when he was seven, and the distance from their fathers became a wound both carried into adulthood.

The ruler of a Sagittarius IC is Jupiter, and its placement shows what each man did with that restless foundation:

  • Kurt’s Jupiter is at 25° Cancer in the 10th house. The ruler of home sits in the house of career, so home and work fused. In Cancer, the sign of family, this also describes the longing to build the family he never had, which he did very publicly through his marriage and his daughter.
  • Layne’s Jupiter is at 18° Leo in the 12th house. The ruler of home sits in the house of retreat, seclusion and hidden places. It is hard to find a more literal description of his final years, spent almost entirely inside his condo in Seattle’s University District, out of sight of the world.

4. Pisces on the Descendant: the people they drew in

A Virgo Ascendant always means a Pisces Descendant, the cusp of the 7th house of partnerships, marriage and the people we build things with. We tend to attract people who carry the qualities of our Descendant sign, because they show us the parts of ourselves we have not yet lived.

Kurt’s Venus sits at 26°33′ Pisces in the 7th house, and Layne’s Moon sits at 27°24′ Pisces in the 7th house, less than a degree apart. Kurt also has Saturn close by, at 28°44′ Pisces. Both men carried a personal planet in the same late degrees of Pisces, in the same house of partnership.

In Layne’s life, Pisces people stood at the centre. Jerry Cantrell, born on 18 March 1966, is a Pisces, and so are Demri Parrott and his close friend Johnny Bacolas. With Jerry, the Virgo and Pisces polarity came alive: Jerry brought the ideas and atmosphere, and Layne gave them form and a voice. Layne’s Moon in the 7th, opposite his Uranus and Pluto, also describes partnerships that were emotionally total, intense and volatile.

Kurt’s 7th house speaks differently. His Venus conjunct Saturn there describes love that feels heavy, serious and fated, and marriage as a place of both commitment and burden. His Moon in Cancer adds another layer, because we also feel drawn to people who share our emotional needs. Tobi Vail, born on 20 July 1969, and Courtney Love, born on 9 July 1964, both have the Sun in Cancer, the sign of Kurt’s Moon. Tracy Marander, whose support carried the early Nirvana years, was a Taurus.

That Taurus thread matters. Both men have Pluto close to the Ascendant, which gives the rising sign a Scorpio undertone, and Taurus is Scorpio’s opposite. It is no surprise that Kurt’s longest creative partnership was with Krist Novoselic, born on 16 May 1965, a Taurus. Both men also have the North Node in Taurus, as we will see in point 7.

5. Uranus and Pluto rising at the same degrees

Both charts hold Uranus at 23° Virgo and Pluto at 19° Virgo, down to the degree. On its own that is generational: Uranus and Pluto met in Virgo in the mid-1960s, and everyone born in 1967 carries them close together. What turns a generational signature into a personal one is its contact with an angle, and in both charts that contact is with the Ascendant.

  • In Kurt’s chart the contact is almost exact. Uranus is just 0°05′ from his Ascendant, as tight as it gets, with Pluto 3°33′ away. Both planets also square his Midheaven within two degrees.
  • In Layne’s chart both planets sit inside the 1st house, Pluto 6° and Uranus 10° past the Ascendant, with Venus 3° before it. His rising degree is wrapped in Venus on one side and Uranus and Pluto on the other.

Pluto is the planet of depth, compulsion, death and rebirth. On the Ascendant it colours the whole personality with Scorpio intensity and gives a magnetism people feel before a word is spoken. Unsurprisingly, both men wrote about pain, inner demons and transformation with a rawness few of their peers could match.

Uranus is the planet of shock, rebellion and the unexpected. On the Ascendant, the point that also describes the physical body, it can point to a nervous system running at high voltage and to sudden events involving the body. Put the two together in Virgo, the sign of health and daily habits, and the chart describes bodies that would be pushed to extremes and lives that would break the mould of the decade.

6. Uranus, the angles and the home at the end

Uranus moves slowly, spending about seven years in each house, and wherever it travels it shakes the ground. In both men’s final chapters it was tied to the 4th house and the IC: the home, the private foundations and, in traditional astrology, the end of the matter.

Kurt. Transiting Uranus crossed his IC during 1986, the year he left home and moved into his first apartment, and it spent the whole Nirvana era in his 4th house: years of constant moves and no settled base. In January 1994 he and Courtney Love bought the house on Lake Washington Boulevard, a sudden change of home, very much Uranus in the 4th. On 5 April 1994 Uranus stood at 26°05′ Capricorn, in the very last degree of his 4th house, with Neptune close by at 23° Capricorn.

In a chart cast for that day at his home, the rising degree crossed transiting Uranus at about 3:47 in the morning. The angles turn every day, so this moment does not prove a time of death, which was never established. It does show that the day carried a Uranus-on-the-Ascendant signature, sudden and physical, on top of Uranus at the end of his 4th house: an unexpected event involving the body, under his own roof.

Layne. The Solar Return is the chart cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its birth position, and it describes the year from one birthday to the next. Layne was by then living almost entirely inside his condo, so Seattle is the natural place to cast it. His return fell on 21 August 2001 at 12:53 pm, and Uranus sat at 22°37′ Aquarius, just 1°18′ from the return chart’s IC: the same message about the home, delivered by the same planet. Saturn and Jupiter both fell in that return chart’s 8th house, the house of endings and of death.

By his natal chart, transiting Uranus had also entered Layne’s 6th house in 2000, the house of health and daily routine, and it was still there on 5 April 2002. For Kurt it was the home; for Layne it was the home and the body’s daily life together.

7. The Nodes in Taurus and Scorpio

The lunar Nodes are the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. The South Node describes what the soul brings in already mastered, the familiar habits it has to release. The North Node describes the less comfortable direction of growth, the purpose this life is reaching towards.

Kurt’s North Node is at 9°35′ Taurus, which puts his South Node at 9°35′ Scorpio. Layne’s axis sits right on a border: by the mean Node it runs from 0°57′ Taurus to 0°57′ Scorpio, and by the true Node from 29°35′ Aries to 29°35′ Libra, the very last degree before Scorpio. Whichever you use, both axes fall across the same houses: the North Node in the 8th and the South Node in the 2nd.

The South Node in Scorpio: an addiction to crisis. For me, this is the placement that says the most about both men, and one of their most typical traits. The South Node in Scorpio carries a kind of addiction to crisis: it knows intensity and extremes far better than it knows peace. It keeps returning to morbid themes such as death, decay, illness and loss, and its modern ruler, Pluto, sits close to both men’s Ascendants, so this pattern never stays in the background.

You can hear it all through their music. Nirvana’s biographer Michael Azerrad observed that sickness and disease run through almost every song on In Utero, while Alice in Chains’ Dirt looks straight at heroin, depression and death. Kurt even put this South Node into words in ‘Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle’, whose chorus confesses a strange nostalgia for sadness itself, as if sorrow were a comfort he was afraid to lose. That is the Scorpio South Node in a nutshell: sadness as a comfort zone.

The same pull shaped their relationships. Their great loves were intense, consuming and turbulent, bonds in which passion and pain were hard to tell apart. It also shows in something quieter: a real difficulty relaxing, or trusting the simpler, less dramatic side of life.

This is exactly what the North Node in Taurus asks of them. Taurus is the sign of calm, of the body at ease, of simple and steady pleasures. For a Scorpio South Node, an ordinary, peaceful day can be the hardest lesson of all.

The houses add an interesting fold to all this. The axis of signs is Taurus and Scorpio, while the axis of houses is the 8th and the 2nd, which are the natural houses of Scorpio and Taurus. The North Node sits in Taurus but in Scorpio’s house; the South Node sits in Scorpio but in Taurus’s house. Both charts are wrapped twice around the same question: what we hold on to, what we crave, and what we have to surrender.

  • South Node in the 2nd house: the familiar pull is towards possession, comfort, the senses and the body’s appetites. Taken to excess, this is where cravings live, and astrologers often look here when addiction runs through a life. Kurt’s Mars also sits in his 2nd house, close to his South Node, adding urgency to that pull.
  • North Node in Taurus in the 8th house: the growth lies in learning to share, to merge with others without losing oneself, and to let go. Taurus gives it a Venus colour, which points to talents that are sensual and musical, and to a self-worth that has to be grown from within rather than borrowed from the crowd.

Two souls, in other words, arriving with the same lesson and the same gift.

8. Mars in Scorpio

Mars passed through Scorpio twice in 1967, and each man caught one of those passages: Kurt at 1°48′ in February, Layne at 18°21′ in August. Mars is at home in Scorpio, its traditional sign, so in both charts it is strong, concentrated and deep rather than loud.

Mars in Scorpio feels everything at full strength and shows very little of it. It is magnetic, private and fiercely loyal, slow to trust and almost impossible to win back once betrayed. In relationships it tends to attach quickly and intensely, with jealousy and a need for control close behind. It also has remarkable powers of endurance, the ability to keep going through pain that would stop other people.

There is a further link worth noticing. Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio, the sign of both men’s South Node, so in each chart Mars is the planet that carries out the South Node’s old habits. A strong Mars in its own sign gives those habits real force.

  • Kurt’s Mars is in the 2nd house, in an exact trine to his Sun (0°00′). His drive flowed easily into his identity and creative will, and it sat in the same house as his South Node: the house of the body’s resources and appetites.
  • Layne’s Mars is in the 3rd house, conjunct Neptune (3°19′) and in an exact square to Jupiter (0°12′). The 3rd is the house of words and the voice, which fits a singer whose delivery could cut straight through you. Mars with Neptune is the classic signature of a will that dissolves into something larger, whether music, devotion or escape, and the square to Jupiter amplifies whatever it touches.

9. The Moon in the 5th house on 5 April

The Moon is the fastest body in the sky, spending only about two and a half days in each house, and it sets the emotional weather of a single day. On 5 April 1994 it moved from 11° to 23° Aquarius, inside Kurt’s 5th house from midnight to midnight. On 5 April 2002 it moved from 23° Capricorn to 5° Aquarius, inside Layne’s 5th house for the whole day as well.

The 5th house is the house of pleasure, play, creativity and self-expression, and also of risk and the search for relief. The Moon there describes a day whose mood leaned towards escape and the need to feel something lighter, rather than one of open crisis. It describes the emotional climate of the day, not its cause. There is a further detail: with Capricorn on the 5th cusp and Aquarius on the 6th, both men’s 5th houses are ruled by Saturn, the planet that runs through this whole story.

Why the sky looked so similar. The two dates are exactly eight years apart, and eight years is one of astronomy’s most remarkable rhythms. Eight solar years almost match 99 lunar months and five cycles of Venus, the same cycle that makes Venus trace a five-pointed star around the zodiac. So the sky of 5 April 2002 was nearly a copy of the sky of 5 April 1994:

On 5 April19942002
Sun15°45′ Aries15°51′ Aries
Venus4°55′ Taurus5°37′ Taurus
MoonAquarius, waningCapricorn into Aquarius, waning
Saturn7°50′ Pisces10°51′ Gemini

The Sun stood on the same degree, Venus within a degree of the same place in her own sign, and the Moon in the same waning phase in neighbouring degrees. Venus at 5° Taurus fell in Kurt’s 8th house, the house of death and transformation, and on the cusp between Layne’s 8th and 9th. Only Saturn, slower than all of these, had moved on, and where it went is the subject of point 12.

10. The progressed Moon in the 10th house

Secondary progressions count each day after birth as a year of life, a second chart quietly unfolding behind the natal one. The progressed Moon moves about a degree a month, spends roughly two and a half years in each house and describes where our emotional attention is focused in each chapter.

Both men died with the progressed Moon in the 10th house, the house of career, status and public legacy:

  • Kurt’s progressed Moon crossed his Midheaven on 6 November 1992. The months that followed were his peak and his reckoning at once: In Utero was recorded and released, and the MTV Unplugged set was taped in November 1993. The same period brought doubts about direction. He talked about leaving Nirvana, and Michael Stipe later said the two had planned to record together, a session Kurt cancelled at the last minute.
  • Layne’s progressed Moon crossed his Midheaven on 25 December 2000. On 24 July 2001 Columbia released Alice in Chains’ Greatest Hits, a summing up of a career, while Layne lived out of public view. His last recordings with the band dated from 1998, but the pull back towards music was there: in April 2002 he had agreed to sing a guest vocal for Taproot, whose album was being produced by Toby Wright, the producer he trusted most. He died shortly before the session.

The progressions add two more precise contacts. Kurt’s progressed Moon was at 9°59′ Cancer when he died, only three degrees from his natal Moon; his first progressed lunar return, a full emotional cycle completed, was due in July 1994. Layne’s progressed Moon was at 24°44′ Gemini and had squared his natal Uranus exactly on 18 February 2002, six weeks before he died: a classic signature of emotional upheaval and sudden change.

The 10th is also the house of what we leave behind in the world’s memory. It is a sad way for that promise to be fulfilled, but both men did gain the lasting recognition the 10th house speaks of.

11. Saturn, the 27 Club and the seven-year rhythm

Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to circle the zodiac, so the exact Saturn return falls around 29. Being slow, though, Saturn is felt well before exactness, and I read the return as a window that opens around 27, often when Saturn enters the sign of one’s natal Saturn, and closes around 30. Another cycle also completes at 27 for everyone: the progressed Moon returns to its birth position, finishing its first full round. That double return is part of why so many lives turn, and sometimes break, at 27.

Saturn is the planet of structure, time and consequence. It is not a punishment. It asks what is real and what will hold, and when the answer is a life organised around an addiction, its questions can arrive as a crisis.

In both charts Saturn also rules the 5th and 6th houses, because Virgo rising puts Capricorn on the 5th cusp and Aquarius on the 6th. Saturn is therefore the ruler of creativity and pleasure, and of health and daily routine. Kurt’s Saturn sits in his 7th house of partnership; Layne’s sits in his 8th house of loss, shared bonds and death.

Kurt, at 27. The years leading into his return brought the rewards Saturn gives for hard work: Nevermind in 1991, marriage in February 1992, his daughter in August 1992 and a house in January 1994. Then the window opened, almost all at once:

  • 9 January 1994: his progressed Sun reached his natal Saturn at 28°44′ Pisces, exactly, in the 7th house of marriage and partnership. This contact happens once in a lifetime.
  • 28 January 1994: transiting Saturn entered Pisces, the sign of his natal Saturn.
  • 13 February 1994, one week before his 27th birthday: Saturn crossed his natal Sun in the 6th house of health.
  • Early March 1994: the overdose in Rome, with Saturn still sitting on his Sun.
  • 5 April 1994: Saturn at 7°50′ Pisces in his 6th house. His exact return would only have come on 27 March 1996.

Layne, at 28 and 29. Saturn entered Aries, the sign of his natal Saturn, on 7 April 1996. His last concert with Alice in Chains followed on 3 July 1996. On 29 October 1996 Demri Parrott died, with Saturn at 1°39′ Aries in Layne’s 7th house of partners, inside his Saturn return window. The return became exact on 12 April 1997, the same month he bought the University District condo where he would spend the rest of his life: Saturn building the walls he would live inside.

Layne, at 34. Seven years after the window opened at 27, Saturn was again at a hinge of his chart. It crossed his Midheaven three times: on 3 July 2001, 2 January 2002 and, for the last time, 16 March 2002, twenty days before his death. On 5 April 2002 Saturn stood at 10°51′ Gemini, just past the very top of his chart and within a degree of an exact sextile to his natal Saturn. Saturn on the Midheaven is the moment when everything that has been built is weighed in public. The waxing square to his natal Saturn followed in 2003 and 2004, so his 34th year sat at the opening of that seven-year phase, with Saturn at the top of his chart.

12. the two Saturns and the 5 April square

This ties the whole comparison together through Saturn.

Start with the birth charts. Kurt’s Saturn is at 28°44′ Pisces and Layne’s at 11°47′ Aries, thirteen degrees apart, on either side of the border where the zodiac ends and begins again. Kurt’s sits in the 7th house, Layne’s in the 8th: neighbouring houses, neighbouring signs, one Saturn closing the circle and the other opening it.

Now look at the two days they died. On 5 April 1994 Saturn stood at 7°50′ Pisces; on 5 April 2002 it stood at 10°51′ Gemini. The two positions are 93 degrees apart, a square with an orb of three degrees. In other words, the sky at Layne’s death was the sky at Kurt’s death with Saturn turned one quarter further round.

That is not a random coincidence; it is the rhythm itself. A quarter of Saturn’s cycle lasts about seven and a half years, and the eight years between the two deaths are almost exactly one Saturn quarter. It is the same rhythm that runs from 27 to 34 in their ages. The Sun, Moon and Venus repeated their positions on the two dates, as we saw in point 9, while Saturn moved one phase on, the same phase that separates a Saturn return from the square that follows it.

Saturn also falls in a telling place in each chart. On Kurt’s last day it sat in his 6th house, the house of health and daily habits that Saturn itself rules. On Layne’s it had just crossed his Midheaven, the most public point of his chart. Meanwhile the Moon, on both days, was moving through the 5th house, the other house Saturn rules in each of their charts. Seen this way, the two deaths are not just two tragedies on the same date. They are two moments in a single Saturn cycle, eight years and one quarter turn apart.

Two lives, one sky

Looking at these charts side by side, what stays with me is not fate but rhythm. Two men born under the same rising sign, ruled by the same planet, carrying the same generational storm on the Ascendant and the same lesson in their Nodes. Their lives moved to the same Saturn clock, and their deaths fell on the same date, eight years and one Saturn quarter apart.

A chart shows the terrain; it never takes away the person walking through it. Kurt and Layne were not their transits. They were two extraordinarily gifted, sensitive people who turned pain into music that still keeps listeners company, and that is the part of the 10th house promise that truly lasts.

If you want to go deeper into each chart on its own, I have written a dedicated article on Kurt Cobain’s birth chart and another on Layne Staley’s.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, help is there. In 2002 Layne’s parents set up the Layne Staley Memorial Fund with Seattle’s Therapeutic Health Services, to support people with heroin addiction and their families. In the US, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 on 1-800-662-4357. In the UK, FRANK offers free, confidential advice on 0300 123 6600.
